Our Little Gardener

This spring, Hannah has really gotten into planting seeds and flowers. I had gotten these little growing kits at the Target $1 spot that Hannah was eager to do. One afternoon while Ava was napping we gave them a try. We had a great time. In the little pots, Hannah planted zinnias, marigolds and sunflowers. We also planted some in bigger pots. Each day we watered them and watched for signs of growth. The first time we spotted little green sprouts I think I was as excited as Hannah was. Each day feels like an adventure as we look for more plants popping through the soil. Ava tries to get involved too by sticking her hands in the pots. :-)

Hannah's preschool has also gotten the planting bug. They have filled lots of pots with flowers, veggie plants, herbs and fruit plants. Hannah enjoyed picking out different kinds of flowers, etc. to bring in for her preschool friends to help plant.

It has been so fun seeing Hannah develop a "green thumb." Her great-grandpa who was a farmer would be so proud. :-)

Fun at Meijer Gardens

Recently, my brother Dan and his family were in town for a visit. We always love spending time with Dan, Angela and Andrew. When they were here the weather was beautiful and warm (where did that weather go?) so we headed to the Meijer Gardens. The butterflies were still "blooming" so we had fun watching them in action. We also spent some time outside at the children's garden area and at Hannah's favorite, "the Black Stallion" (Davinci's horse). We were glad Nana and Papa (my folks) were able to join us too. We all had a great time.

Spring Break

"It was the best of times, it was the worst of times." This would pretty much sum up our spring break. I'll start with the good stuff. :-) We journeyed to Wisconsin where Doug had a conference at a resort that has a waterpark. Hannah and I have accompanied Doug to this conference several times in the past. It's been great - she and I get to play while Doug attends the conference. This time Ava joined us too, along with my parents.

On our way to the conference we stopped and spent a day with our friends the Javoroskis. We traveled to China together to adopt our Hannah and their Hayley. They also have a daughter Hannah who has been given the name "big Hannah" when our girls get together. :-) They were excited to finally meet Ava and we enjoyed spending time with them. It's always so wonderful to see Hannah and Hayley together again since they share such a special connection. Hannah was eager to share our China pictures with Hayley... luckily Hayley was a receptive audience. It was a beautiful day so we savored the sunshine and spent some time outside. The time passed too quickly. Fortunately, we'll see them again this summer at our annual travel group reunion.

The next day we headed to the conference where my parents met us. Doug had to set up his booth but then had the evening free. We had a fabulous dinner at the Moosejaw Pizza and Brewing Company. Yum-o! That night Doug got to enjoy some one-on-one waterpark time with Hannah while I put Ava to bed. They had a blast! The next day & a half Doug worked at the conference while we played. We did all of our favorite things: pastries (and coffee) at Nina's, slipping down slides and playing in the water, decorating cookies, coloring a tote bag (Hannah), sweets at the Sweet Hut and dinner at the Cracker Barrel. This year Hannah also had a braid/weave thing done in her hair. She was super excited to have it done and of course chose the color pink for the string and beads. Ava was overjoyed to play in the water. We have another "fish" in the family. She couldn't get enough. She especially loved the little spouting fountains. We were so thankful to have my parents along to help care for Ava and Hannah. We all had a great time.

Once we got home we were excited because we had fun things planned for the remaining days of spring break. Hannah did get a chance to play with a couple friends, but then unfortunately she and Ava got sick so we had to cancel the rest of our plans. Both Hannah and Ava had terrible coughs, fever, runny noses, etc. That was the worst of times. It is so hard to see your kids feeling so miserable and know there is only so much you can do. Both Doug and I are still pretty exhausted after many nights of little sleep and some days of not feeling well ourselves. Hannah is feeling better but Ava is still struggling with her cough - poor thing. Hopefully we'll all be healthy soon. It's so nice to see the sunshine and warm weather...my spirits have definitely been lifted after being stuck inside for too long. :-)

I won't subject you to pictures of our "worst of times" so instead here are the "best times" of our spring break:

A Date with Daddy and Butterflies

Recently Doug took the girls to the Meijer Gardens to check out the butterflies. They had a blast and were able to see many beautiful butterflies. Ava was quite surprised when a butterfly landed on her fingers while she was sucking on them. Hannah kept hoping one would land on her too. While they were gone I enjoyed (savored, actually) a quiet, productive afternoon. I think the girls should have a date with Daddy every week. :-)

The Life of a Toddler

Ava is now 16 months and enjoying her status as a toddler. She is very active and keeps us on our toes. :-) She loves climbing on anything and everything, especially little Ava-size chairs and our couches. We've had a few tumbles as she also likes standing up and walking on our couches - eek! She also enjoys raiding our cupboards, playing with the toilet paper, stealing food from the fridge, snooping in my purse to find mints, gum or lipstick, and getting into her sister's things. One look at her mischievious grin and we usually end up laughing at her antics.

She has also become quite the little bookie, much to my delight. We love books, as does Hannah, so it's so fun to see Ava getting into books too. We just love it when Ava brings us a book, turns around and plops down in one of our laps. Her favorites are Ping Ping Panda & Kipper Koala which have flaps that you lift, Time for Bed and Goodnight Moon. Goodnight Moon is getting worn out she loves reading it so much - I think I know it by heart. :-) She even loves crawling into Hannah's lap to look at books. Ava has so much trust in Hannah that she just plops down without making sure she's landing in her lap. That cracks up Hannah and is fun to watch.

I put together a little slide show of Ava pictures from the past few months - they give a good glimpse of what our little peanut has been up to. We just love her to pieces and can't believe she's only been with our family for 8 months.
